"Why," you ask? Because we want profile pages to have freedom of customization, but also to have some consistency. This way, when anyone visits a deviant, they know they can always find the art in the top left, and personal info in the top right.
Don't forget, restraints can bring out the creativity in you!

with classifications, i guess its just a matter of defining what you work is. If it is a photo, go into photography and then find what fits. Some of the other categories can be confusing.
But the basics are, Photography(photos ), Literature(writing of any type), Drawing and Illustration (basically covers most art), and Fan Art (for pictures of people/characters/things from shows, movies, books or games)
dont be too worried if you get it wrong, people dont usually pay attention to categories and if worse comes to worse, deviantart will move it for you
Another tip, if it doesnt fit into any category within one of those, go to Miscellaneous which will cover everything
